Thank you to the many parents who have welcomed me back after my spinal surgery and period of physical rehabilitation, which is ongoing. It has been such a reality check for me... how much I missed the St Mary's community, especially the students, and how much I really value my profession.
Yesterday, 8 August was a day of great significance for Australian Catholics and Australian Educators. In 2010 Mary Mackillop was canonised as St Mary of the Cross MacKillop and 8 August is her Feast Day. What is most admired about Mary Mackillop is her unyielding mission to provide education for the disadvantaged and marginalised. I hold those values close to my heart and take pride in the fact that our school values are Learning, Justice and Love.
Mary Mackillop is remembered for quotes that have endured over the ages and we share these with our students. The first quote that really resounds is 'Never see a need without doing something about it' which truly sums up the best side of our human condition. My favourite quote though is that 'We are but travellers here', reminding us how important it is to keep perspective, focus on what matters most and try to leave the world in a kinder place than you found it.
My thanks to Mr Meyers and the Year 4 team for providing a beautiful mass yesterday to celebrate our first and only Australian saint so far.
Athletics Assembly
Today we will celebrate the achievements of our fantastic Athletics Team, who had a spectacular day at Southern Region last week. Records broken, PBs achieved and ribbons galore, crowning St Mary's as the overall winning team. Our Primary Students are regaled in the Green and Gold today, inspired by the fantastic efforts of our Australian Olympic Team. Like me, I imagine you have also been both inspired and humbled by some of the beautiful stories behind the medals and competitors. It is a wonderful time in history for us to celebrate as a nation the opportunities our children have to discover their talents, whether they be sporting, academic, social or creative in a country where dreams are still possible.
New playground equipment
Apart from the inconvenience of bursting a water pipe yesterday, it has been exciting to see the new playground equipment coming together this week. It has been designed to be a more 'grown up' version of a playground for our primary students in a circuit style. This design has been approved by the students, although they were insistent that we include a slide, which is a nod to the inner child in us all. The circuit can be used as play equipment and also as a tool for PE lessons, where students can focus on building core strength and stamina. My thanks to the Catholic Education Office of Bathurst and our CaFE group who have provided the funds to make this happen. Next on the agenda for 2025 is the infants playground... resurfacing, remarking and hopefully new playground equipment.
Thank you for your ongoing support for St Mary's and trust in our profession.

Inclusion Awareness Program
On Wednesday Prue McCarthy visited our Year 5 students and facilitated an inclusion Awareness program called ‘Different on the outside but same on the Inside.’ Students examined and discussed several topics including the different types of disabilities, appropriate terms to use when we are speaking about people with disabilities and how it is important to put the person first, being resilient, compassion and inclusion. Prue was born with Cerebral Palsy and was one of the first people with a physical disability to enter into the mainstream education system. Prue works with our students every year to help educate our students about people with disabilities and how to be inclusive and understanding of others who may be different to ourselves.
Science Week
The school theme for National Science Week in 2024 isSpecies Survival - More than just sustainability. The theme aims to highlight the importance of science and innovation in ensuring the survival and thriving of different species in an ever-changing world.
Students have an amazing variety of topics to investigate, and be able to dive into issues of particular interest to them: disease-causing organisms, life-saving chemicals, clean water, photosynthesis, genetic screening, physics of building structures, artificial intelligence, and microplastics. We look forward to sharing some photos of our Science lessons in the next newsletter edition in week 5!

Starr's Planetarium
Last week, Years 1, 3 and 5 engaged in an incursion throughout our solar system. This was related to the Science and Technology units of work, Earth and Space. The students watched 360 degree movies in a large dome. Year 5 explored Aboriginal stories in the sky, Day and Night.
Over the past two weeks, many of our students have had a variety of opportunities to extend and challenge their mathematical and computational thinking and problem solving skills. The Newcastle Permanent Mathematics Competition (Year 5 & 6), the Australian Mathematics Competition (Year 3-6), Maths Olympiad #3 (Olympiad Team), as well as the ongoing Australian Maths Trust Enrichment Program have all taken place this fortnight. Over the next few weeks, some of our students have elected to sit the ICAS academic competitions for Digital Technologies, English, Science and Mathematics. We value providing opportunities for our students to be challenged and motivated to showcase their academic achievements.

Celebrating National Tree Day: Growing Our Green Spaces
This July, our school joined the nation in celebrating National Tree Day, a special event dedicated to nurturing and appreciating our environment. As part of this initiative, student representatives from each grade (SRC) enthusiastically participated in planting a tree in our school playground. This hands-on experience not only taught our students the importance of trees in our ecosystem but also allowed them to contribute directly to making our school a greener and more beautiful place.
Each tree symbolises growth and a commitment to caring for our planet. We are proud of our student's efforts and look forward to watching these trees grow along with our community. Let's continue to nurture these young plants and celebrate the positive impact we can have on our environment!
